The Educational Opportunity Gap

There is a long-standing gap in educational opportunity and attainment that looms between Black students and their White and Asian counterparts. Although test scores are rising among Black students in Washington, this racial divide still exists. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Education reports significantly lower test scores for African American K-12 students.

In 2024, the Educational Opportunity Gap Oversight and Accountability Committee (EOGOAC), in partnership with the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs (CAAA), commissioned an update to the landmark 2008 report on the state of African American education in Washington. Our report emerges from a deeply engaged, statewide research effort.
